APG Celebrates 57th Anniversary of Medicare

July 29, 2022

Washington, DC – On the 57th Anniversary of the enactment of Medicare, the nation’s core health insurance program for those 65 and older or disabled, America’s Physician Groups (APG) celebrates the nation’s effort to deliver high quality and affordable health care for Medicare beneficiaries through a growing number of value-based payment models.

APG also salutes the Biden administration for its goal that all enrollees in the traditional Medicare program are in accountable relationships with their providers by 2030. That means arrangements in which their physicians, hospitals, and others deliver the coordinated and integrated care that beneficiaries and taxpayers deserve, and are also held directly responsible for the costs.

APG’s nearly 350 physician group members, representing approximately 170,000 physicians and caring for 90 million patients, are actively engaged in a variety of these accountable models today—ranging from Medicare Advantage to newer value-based care models such as the ACO Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (REACH) Model. “We are committed to participating in these models to help deliver the kind of care patients really want and need, especially those in underserved communities, where our members are working to expand access to care, improve patients’ health, and deliver services they need that support their health, such as access to food and transportation,” said Susan Dentzer, APG President and CEO.

In an APG video, Medicare patient Gary Gruntz and his physician Bhavank Doshi, MD, from Preferred Primary Care Physicians (an agilon health partner) in Pittsburgh, PA, explain how his dedicated care team—working in a value-based care setting—greatly improved Gary’s health and well-being.

Happy Anniversary, Medicare—and may all your beneficiaries one day be as blessed as Gary!
