Physician Group Association Sets Goal for Members to Move 90% of Medicare Payment to Capitation by 2018

Washington, D.C.—CAPG President and CEO Donald H. Crane announced ambitious goals for CAPG members to accelerate the transformation of healthcare delivery from a volume-based system to one that incentivizes value and quality.

Specifically, CAPG set the goal for its members to move 90% of their Medicare payments to capitation by 2018.

The payment goal is part of a broader strategy for CAPG members to transform the way that healthcare is delivered. By pairing capitated payment models with robust quality reporting and clinical accountability, CAPG members can improve outcomes for Medicare patients.

Earlier this year, Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia M. Burwell announced a goal of moving 30% of Medicare fee-for-service payments to alternative, value-driven payment models by 2016 and 50% by 2018. CAPG has embraced this goal and further defined value-driven models for its members to encompass the most advanced alternative payment model available, capitated payments.

“We believe this bold goal will support and drive the transformation of the healthcare delivery system,” Crane said. “CAPG looks forward to working with the Administration and Congress to continue to advance healthcare delivery in the years to come.

“To support this goal, CAPG has outlined the advocacy, education, and leadership activities it will take to guide its members in this transformation,” he said. “We know that there is much work to be done and CAPG welcomes the challenge.”
