Michael Conroy, MD

Michael Conroy, M.D. serves as President and CEO of Sutter Medical Group (SMG), which is composed of approximately 1,200 clinicians serving the greater Sacramento Region. A practicing internal medicine physician, Dr. Conroy became CEO after serving for seven years as the medical group’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

In his role as President/CEO of Sutter Medical Group, Dr. Conroy is responsible for developing and deploying medical group strategies, growing and sustaining a group culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion, educating clinicians about the evolving business of healthcare, engaging clinicians as individuals and a group with Sutter Health’s priorities and initiatives, ensuring excellence in clinical care delivery, partnering successfully with Sutter’s hospitals, ASCs and home care, and managing the business contracting for the group. He actively supports the SMG leadership development program, REDI task force and the work of operational group leaders. He represents SMG on engagement with system leaders and teams in all relevant aspect of the healthcare delivery system.

Prior to joining SMG, Dr. Conroy was a member of Sutter’s Santa Cruz Medical Group, which later became part of Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group (PAFMG). His leadership roles there included divisional-level operations, regional Medical Director of Quality, and creating Sutter’s first organizational-level Continuing Medical Education Committee. He later moved to a full-time role as Medical Director of the Lean Promotion Office in PAFMG before serving as interim CMO.

In addition to his CEO role with SMG, Dr. Conroy represents all of Sutter’s physicians as a member of the Board of Trustees for the California Medical Association and of America’s Physician Groups; is a member of the Group Practice Improvement Network’s Planning Committee; and an active member of the American Medical Group Association’s CEO Council.

Dr. Conroy earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy/pre-med from the University of Notre Dame and holds an M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Virginia Mason Medical Center.
